HONOLULU (AP) - Oahu recreation areas could be equipped with bathroom cameras as Honolulu officials look to end park vandalism.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports (https://bit.ly/1ZDVvZv) a fire destroyed a comfort station at Keehi Lagoon around midnight Wednesday.

City spokesman Jesse Broder Van Dyke says that after Wednesday’s fire, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell directed staff members to explore installing security cameras at park comfort stations including Keehi Lagoon.

Vandals torched portable toilets at Kaiaka Beach Park in January and March.

An Ala Moana Beach Park comfort station toilet was smashed in January.

Broder Van Dyke said police saw a decrease in vandalism after two cameras were installed at Hans L’Orange Park in Waipahu.

City spokesman Andrew Pereira says the cause of Wednesday’s fire was unknown.
