GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - A Glendale woman is being charged with child abuse after a search for her missing children led to the discovery that she had left them home alone in unsanitary conditions.

Police spokeswoman Tracey Breeden says 26-year-old Shawntaye Beavers was booked on one count of child abuse Sunday.

She was also arrested on outstanding warrants in Phoenix for disorderly conduct and theft.

Beavers reported her children, ages 8, 4 and 2, missing around 1 p.m.

She says she left at noon to run an errand.

Police later learned that a relative had taken them after finding them unsupervised.

Breeden says the home was dirty with fecal matter inside and the children were alone longer than originally reported.

The children are now in the custody of the Department of Child Safety.

This story has been corrected to indicate that the children are with the state’s Department of Child Safety, not the Department of Child Services.
