LOWELL, Mass. (AP) - Authorities are investigating after two police officers shot and killed a 39-year-old Lowell man who they say was armed with a meat cleaver and a knife.

The Middlesex district attorney’s office on Sunday identified the man as Jose Perez.

Authorities say Perez called 911 around 11 p.m. Saturday and said he was going to kill everyone. A woman reported around the same time that a man at the Cambridge Street home had a knife and was threatening to kill people.

Authorities say responding officers shot Perez after he ignored their commands to drop his weapons.

Perez was taken to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Both officers involved in the shooting were placed on leave pending an investigation according to the department’s policy. Police haven’t released their names.
