NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a stolen car crashed into a police cruiser at a road safety checkpoint in Newark, leading to the arrests of three city residents.

The crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the area of Ferry and Brill streets.

Authorities say one of the patrol cars at the checkpoint was equipped with a license plate recognition device that notified officers the car had been reported stolen.

As that was happening, the car’s driver attempted to avoid the road block but instead struck the police car. No officers were seriously injured in the accident.

Authorities say the occupants of the stolen vehicle were being sought because they were suspected of being involved in a shooting in East Orange. All three occupants were charged with receiving stolen property.
