STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (AP) - Thousands of worshippers took route to the top of Stone Mountain for the annual Easter Sunrise service.

WSB-TV reports (https://2wsb.tv/1MKUlnx ) that the service took place Sunday morning on the top of the mountain in a dense fog to hear uplifting sermons. The sunrise service at Stone Mountain is a tradition dating back more than 70 years.

Park gates and Summit Skyride opened at 4 a.m. and services began at 7 a.m. Some rode the skyride to the top of the mountain, while other climbed up.

The event began in 1944 before the land around Stone Mountain was officially owned by the State of Georgia.
