TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Toledo will pay $1.5 million for inmate beds at a regional jail under the condition that it will be reimbursed if its lawsuit prevails.

The (Toledo) Blade reports (https://bit.ly/1RFLZ8c ) the payment must be made by April 1 under Friday’s agreement.

Marc Fishel is an attorney for the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio as well as commissioners in several counties. He says the jail must be paid in order to stay open and not be forced to release inmates.

Toledo filed a lawsuit in December to determine who should pay for the cost of more inmates. It says Lucas County should cover the housing costs of state inmates, regardless of where they were sentenced or arrested.

Toledo says it shouldn’t have to pay for handling inmates coming from its suburbs.
