SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A Salem man accused of torturing a cat and leaving it to die is set to go to trial next week.

KATU-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1UQDTde ) that the man faces felony counts of first-degree animal abuse, aggravated animal abuse, animal neglect and theft. He is accused of trapping the cat, which was someone else’s, and then leaving it in the heat to starve to death.

The case has sparked outrage online, with an online petition calling for serious punishment garnering nearly 8,000 signatures.
