WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - More than 1,000 rape kits remain untested in Delaware evidence rooms.

A preliminary report from the state Criminal Justice Council has found that 22 Delaware police departments had 1,018 untested sexual assault kits. The kits contain any evidence taken from a victim after a sexual assault.

Of the 1,018 kits, 333 cases are considered unsolved, 81 have suspect DNA and were not prosecuted and 385 have no suspect DNA and were not prosecuted.

The report also found that 17 departments did not have any sexual assault kits in storage and all departments were required to inventory their evidence.

The Criminal Justice Council received a Sexual Assault Kit Initiative federal grant totaling $1,168,662 from the Bureau of Justice Assistance to which help support the audit.
