NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) - A Hudson Valley city is working to fix nearly 100 leaks that officials say are responsible for the loss of millions of gallons of water.

The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports (https://bit.ly/1REWlPy ) Newburgh’s Water Department is pushing to fix leaks that officials estimate caused a daily loss of about half the water prepared for consumption.

The city produced 1.7 billion gallons for consumption last year but lost about 2.3 million gallons a day due to leaks. That’s just about $14,000 worth of water. A contractor identified the scale and locations of the leaks last month.

Seventy-four leaks had been repaired as of last week and the project is expected to be finished by the end of the month.
