DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines police say a man who died after being found unconscious in his cell may have ingested a bag of drugs as he was arrested two days earlier.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says 38-year-old Lamont Walls, of Des Moines, was pronounced dead Friday at a hospital. He’d been arrested Wednesday on charges of probation violation and other crimes.

The Des Moines Police Department said in a news release Sunday that Walls ran Wednesday as officers tried to arrest him. Police say that after Walls was caught and was being arrested, officers saw him swallow what they thought was a bag of narcotics.

Police say Walls was taken to a hospital for evaluation and then released. Then he was taken to jail.
