SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say two men who died after a speeding car crashed into another vehicle during a police chase were San Bernardino County residents.

The crash Monday in the city of San Bernardino was so intense it destroyed the front end of one car and sent its engine flying onto the street.

Authorities say a deputy began chasing a Honda in the city of Colton around 5 a.m. but backed off as the car hit speeds of up to 100 mph.

A short time later, the Honda blew through a stoplight and struck a Mustang.

The coroner’s office says the driver of the Honda, 30-year-old Rudy Javier Vargas of San Bernardino, died instantly.

A passenger in the Mustang, 26-year-old Alejandro Peyro of Colton, also died at the scene. The Mustang’s driver had minor injuries.
