SLIDELL, La. (AP) - A St. Tammany Parish work release program employee is in jail after authorities said he took an inmate to see his sick grandmother without permission.

The sheriff’s office said the incident was discovered after a headcount early Saturday found 19-year-old Kendal Ferrand missing from his bed. At that time 40-year-old Sidney Brooks Jr., an employee of St. Tammany Workforce Solutions, was also unaccounted for.

WWL-TV (https://bit.ly/1V2dlo8 ) reports Ferrand was found in the building after deputies were called and Brooks was located at a gas station filling one of the program’s vans.

Authorities say Ferrand told them he paid Brooks to take him to New Orleans where his grandmother lives, and was gone about two hours.

Brooks faces one count of assisting escape while Ferrand faces one count of simple escape.
