MACON, Ga. (AP) - A former Macon animal shelter employee has been arrested after being accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars that had been donated to the shelter.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that 59-year-old Anne Brennaman was charged with fiduciary theft on Monday.

Authorities say a volunteer told investigators that Brennaman had taken “a large amount” of money that had been given to the shelter and used it for “overseas trips” and “personal expenses.”

Deputies say a subsequent investigation into Brennaman’s practices revealed a misuse of more than $88,000 of the shelter’s money.

When the accusations surfaced last summer, Brennaman told the Macon Telegraph (https://bit.ly/1oiwDsu ) that the accusation was “baseless” and that her lawyer had “documentation” showing how the money had been spent.
