BOSTON (AP) - A former financial services executive has been chosen to head the state’s tax agency.

Mike Heffernan will take over in May as Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, which oversees the collection of state taxes and payment of child support.

Heffernan was the 2014 Republican nominee for state treasurer, losing to Democrat Deb Goldberg in the general election.

He spent nearly two decades with CitiGroup and was also a managing director at Salomon Brothers.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker previously named Heffernan to serve on boards that oversee the state’s pension reserves and the retirement fund for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.
