FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) - Authorities say a 32-year-old New Bedford man has been sentenced to prison for assaulting his girlfriend in front of her children.

Eddie Gutierrez III pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, intimidation and assault and battery. He was sentenced to four years in prison followed by two years of probation.

Prosecutors say Gutierrez assaulted his girlfriend in her home in July 2014 after the two argued. Gutierrez grabbed the victim by her hair and dragged her into the kitchen, where he held a knife to her throat.

The victim’s children, an 11-year-old and a 16-year-old, attempted to stop Gutierrez, who gave the 16-year-old a knife and challenged the child to kill him.

Prosecutors had requested a six-year prison term and 10 years of probation.
