RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Virginia rite of spring involving fish and politics is getting a major makeover.

The 68th Shad Planking scheduled for April 22 will try to combine its traditional political rally and heaping servings of shad, along with a wine and whiskey festival.

The Daily Press reports (https://goo.gl/EEeJeR ) that the Wakefield Ruritans, who organize the yearly event, hired a marketing firm to help reimagine the event and draw more attendees.

In the middle of the 20th century, Shad Planking began as an event where the segregationist Democratic machine would select candidates for statewide office. It’s since become a Republican-dominated festival and seen its attendance numbers decline.

Several politicians, including former GOP presidential hopeful Jim Gilmore, are set to speak at this year’s event.
