KINGSTON, N.Y. (AP) - The trial of a Hudson Valley man charged in the 2014 slaying of his father is set to get underway.

Opening statements are scheduled to begin Tuesday in the trial of Nicholas Pascarella Jr. The 41-year-old Clintondale man is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Nicholas Pascarella Sr.

A judge told potential jurors that a defense of extreme emotional disturbance may be used during the trial.

Investigators say the younger Pascarella admitted to beating his father to death with a baseball bat but said the elder man sexually abused him and other relatives.

Public defender Mariann Connolly says it hasn’t been decided whether her client will take the stand.

This story has been corrected to show that it hasn’t been decided whether the defendant will take the stand.
