NEWFANE, Vt. (AP) - Residents are reeling after a local favorite haunt in the Vermont town of Newfane was gutted by a fire.

The Brattleboro Reformer reports (https://bit.ly/1njfgrh ) state Route 30 was shut down for several hours as fire crews from multiple municipalities battled Wednesday’s blaze at the Newfane Cafe and Creamery.

Officials say the fire broke out between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday, with Newbrook firefighters first to respond.

Phil Tirrell, mutual aid coordinator, says the flames originated in the rear outside of the building before spreading to the structure and extending to its inside.

All occupants inside the building, which also houses offices, were safely evacuated before the fire spread.

The flames were knocked down after firefighters weathered heavy winds and the building’s uniquely challenging structure.
