RUMFORD, Maine (AP) - A Maine man who authorities say escaped from custody and led officers on a chase in a stolen SUV has been ordered held on $40,000 bail.

The Sun Journal reports (https://bit.ly/21J9sqt ) Derek Cook is facing more than a dozen charges including escaping from a police van. His lawyer on Wednesday recommended that bail be set at $10,000 cash. A Rumford judge set bail at $40,000.

Franklin County authorities say the 31-year-old Wilton man slipped off a handcuff and fled from a transport on Tuesday. Authorities say the driver took him back into custody but Cook got away again after a scuffle.

Cook then allegedly broke into a home and forced a woman to hand over keys to an SUV. Police say he was arrested after crashing into a tree.
