BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - A man has been sentenced to 110 years in prison for a fatal shooting outside a downtown Billings apartment complex.

The Billings Gazette reports (https://goo.gl/fyAVw0 ) Jonathan Martinez was sentenced Thursday for the Oct. 2, 2014, death of David Vallie, a 36-year-old father of eight.

Martinez, who shot Vallie in the abdomen, said during trial that the shooting was “a horrible accident.”

Martinez also was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison in a separate burglary case in which he was accused of breaking into a man’s home and beating him over a $300 debt.

During Martinez’s homicide trial it was revealed that the pistol he used belonged to a federal Bureau of Indian Affairs special agent and had been stolen from an unmarked service vehicle.
