PADERBORN, Germany (AP) - German second-division side Paderborn has sacked former Germany midfielder Stefan Effenberg as coach less than five months after he made his debut.

The club says Rene Mueller is to take over with 10 league games left in the season. Paderborn, which was relegated from the Bundesliga last season, is second from bottom of the second division and five points from safety.

The 47-year-old Effenberg, a former Bayern Munich and Borussia Moenchengladbach midfielder, started with two wins after taking over on Oct. 13 but was unable to inspire the side to any more victories in the 12 league games that followed. Paderborn also suffered an embarrassing 7-1 German Cup defeat to Borussia Dortmund during his tenure.

Paderborn next plays Greuther Fuerth on Saturday.
