ST. MARTINVILLE, La. (AP) - Funeral services are scheduled Friday for longtime St. Martin Parish Sheriff Charles Fuselier, who died while on a trip to Texas over the weekend.

Pellerin Funeral Home of St. Martinville says Fuselier died Sunday at St. Mark’s Hospital in LaGrange, Texas. He was 73.

Fuselier served as sheriff from 1980 until he retired in 2003. He oversaw the completion of a new parish jail, a parish-wide 911 system, the creation of a sheriff’s substation, and the construction of a facility for juveniles.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in New Iberia. Survivors include his wife, Lyndahl; a son and two daughters.
