ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say they’ve seized 55 dogs from an Asheville man’s home while investigating a report of possible animal abuse.

Asheville police said in a news release that 62-year-old Ronald L. Robinson was arrested Thursday and charged with 55 counts of animal cruelty.

Police spokeswoman Christina Hallingse tells the Asheville Citizen-Times (https://avlne.ws/1qfA6Kb ) that local veterinarians are caring for the dogs, but one of the animals has already died during treatment.

Hallingse says the dogs, most of whom are smaller breeds, are in varying conditions.

Staff members at Asheville Humane Society tell WLOS-TV (https://bit.ly/1pJJFjR) that many of the dogs were unable to see because they were covered in so much fecal matter.

Robinson tells the television station that he knew he had too many dogs, but he’d been unable to sell them.
