SAN DIEGO (AP) - A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew lifted a sick crew member off a cruise ship in the Pacific 260 miles south of San Diego and brought him to a hospital for treatment.

The long-range rescue was organized when the crew of the cruise ship Star Princess reported at midmorning Wednesday that a 28-year-old man had symptoms of acute appendicitis. At the time the ship was more than 350 miles south of San Diego en route to Los Angeles.

The Coast Guard says a flight surgeon recommended the medical evacuation and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was launched shortly after 3 p.m. The man was hoisted off the ship at 4:45 p.m.

A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules airplane from Sacramento was also assigned to support the mission due to the long distance.
