GRETNA, La. (AP) - Prosecutors say a former police sergeant arrested in 2015 after his wife was wounded by a gunshot has pleaded guilty to negligent injury.

The Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office said in a news release the plea was entered Wednesday by 46-year-old David Kramer Jr., who was sentenced to six months of probation.

Kramer served with a Louisiana police unit that patrols the Crescent City Connection bridge at New Orleans. He was arrested in October. Police said he initially faced a charge of attempted second-degree murder. Prosecutors filed the lesser charge after reviewing the case.

The release says Kramer’s wife testified that he was preparing to leave their home after they argued. He had retrieved his personal weapon, which went off as she tried to keep him from leaving with it.
