IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A lawyer says a proposed settlement of a lawsuit against an Iowa City landlord could amount to $1 million in payments to some former tenants.

Chris Warnock of the Iowa Tenants’ Project represents about 14,000 people in the class action lawsuit. He said Wednesday that if a court approves the settlement at a July hearing, tenants and subtenants who rented from Apartments Downtown between 2010 and 2014 will receive $65 for each year of their tenancy. He says that could total around $1 million.

The company says in a news release that it “is aiming to create a better rental culture.”

Iowa Tenants’ Project sued in December 2010, saying the company charged illegal fees and withheld unreasonable amounts from security deposits through leases used from 2010 through 2014.
