WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s office says that a detention corporal has been arrested on multiple counts of unlawful sexual relations with an inmate.
Sheriff Jeff Easter said Wednesday that authorities received a complaint from a third party on March 25 that a corporal at the Sedgwick County Jail and a female inmate had sexual contact.
The victim corroborated the story and said that her first sexual encounter with the corporal was Jan. 4. At least two other encounters occurred in the following weeks. The woman is no longer in the custody of the Sedgwick County Jail but is being held elsewhere.
Easter said that the corporal, who has not been identified, was arrested Wednesday on two counts of unlawful sexual relations and one count of attempted unlawful sexual relations.
Easter said the corporal, who is no longer with the sheriff’s office, had been an employee since October 2008 and was promoted to his position about a year and a half ago.
Easter said this is the third similar case since he became sheriff, but that the problem isn’t systemic.
“You have some individuals in here who either somehow got through our hiring process years ago and have turned to this type of activity or (have done so) due to the stresses of the job and the relationships that are built in here with the inmates that they guard,” Easter said. “It’s not acceptable.”
The case will be handed over to Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett’s office for review.
