NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a 43-year-old man has died after losing control of a snowmobile in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and crashing into a guard rail post and sign.

The Marquette County sheriff’s department says Chad M. Plasters from the Lower Peninsula community of Milan died following Thursday’s crash along Trail No. 14 in Negaunee Township. He was riding with other snowmobilers at the time.

Investigators say he failed to negotiate a curve and lost control. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

According to state figures, The Mining Journal of Marquette reports the man is at least the 22nd snowmobiler killed this winter. MLive.com reports that’s up from 12 recorded by the same time last winter, but officials aren’t sure what has led to the increase.
