WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $108 million contract to a Connecticut company to build the final section of the Interstate 85 widening project in Rowan and Cabarrus counties.

A statement from the department says work on the 5.9 mile section of the project can start as early as March 28. Work should be completed with all lanes open to traffic by December 2018, almost half a year ahead of schedule.

The contract was awarded to The Lane Construction Corp. of Cheshire, Connecticut.

Division 9 Engineer Pat Ivey said completion of the project will improve safety and provide congestion relief for motorists on I-85 for years to come.
