GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) - A jury has recommended a death sentence for an Alabama man convicted of killing his 20-month-old daughter.

The Gadsden Times reports (https://bit.ly/1R1xBaf ) that jurors reached the decision Friday after finding Stephon Lindsay guilty of capital murder earlier in the week.

Etowah County Circuit Judge Billy Ogletree has scheduled sentencing for May 16.

During the trial, jurors heard Lindsay say on video that his god, “Yahweh,” instructed him to kill his daughter Maliyah. Police said the girl suffered multiple bows to the neck with a hatchet.

Gadsden police found the child’s body in a wooded area on March 12, 2013.

Lindsay had pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
