LONG BEACH, La. (AP) - A body found near Long Beach Harbor on Friday has been identified as that of a missing kayaker.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove told Gulf Coast news outlets on Saturday that the victim was 43-year-old Wilberto Mendoza of Long Beach.

Rescue crews went to the area Friday after a passer-by noticed a dog swimming in the water. They found an empty kayak nearby and, later, they found the body.

Hargrove said the cause of death has been listed as drowning and the case has been ruled accidental.

Hargrove said Mendoza was not wearing a life jacket. He said that was a major contributing factor in the death.
