INEZ, Ky. (AP) - A Martin County man died after a tree fell on his family’s mobile home, trapping four of his family members as well.

Rescuers were able to free the four relatives early Saturday, but Larry Whitt, 56, died in the accident, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported (https://bit.ly/1OWUkwj).

Martin County Sheriff John Kirk said the four rescued family members - three women and an 18-year-old man - sustained relatively minor injuries.

Whitt was killed when an oak tree, which was at least 30 inches in diameter at its base, collapsed on the roof as well as on parts of the sides of the mobile home, Kirk said.

“It was just horrible,” Kirk said. “These people lost everything they had. I don’t know what they’re going to do.”

He said a 62-year-old woman had been sleeping on a couch and was trapped under the roof. She was taken the hospital after rescuers were able to get in through a window.

Kirk said that the oak tree appeared to have grown in the thin soil of an old coal bank on a hillside behind the home.

“They’re very fortunate,” Kirk said of the surviving people in the home. “They’re blessed to be alive.”

He says rescuers and community members used chain saws and their hands to clear debris from the house so Whitt’s body could be removed.
