GRETNA, La. (AP) - Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul Connick Jr. says a 44-year-old Metairie man has been convicted of raping a girl over a 4-year period, starting when she was 8 years old.

Connick says in a news release that Simon Shokr faces a mandatory life sentence.

He says jurors deliberated about 90 minutes before convicting him late Friday of aggravated rape, sexual battery and indecent behavior with a juvenile.

Judge Stephen Grefer scheduled sentencing for March 23.

Connick says the abuse began in 2008. An assistant principal reported that the girl changed in fifth grade, from a top student to one who had to be disciplined.

Connick says she said nothing until high school, when she told two classmates. One told a teacher, who was required by law to report the allegation. That led to a state and sheriff’s office investigation.
