NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans police say a driver in the middle of an early morning three-car crash was hit and killed by a fourth car when he walked onto Interstate 10, apparently to check damage or talk to other drivers.

A police spokesman says the coroner will release his name after notifying next of kin.

Officer Dave Badie (BAY-dee) says a second person was critically injured in the wreck about 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

He says three other people were unhurt.

Badie says the chain-reaction wreck started when a sports car apparently ran out of control, hit a guard rail and bounced back into traffic. It was hit from behind by a compact car. Another car then hit the compact car.

Other details were unavailable.

Badie says the wreck was still being investigated and nobody had been cited Sunday afternoon.
