BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) - Some neighbors in Southern California are upset that a person suspected of stealing their mail is only facing misdemeanor charges.

KBAK-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1OXrEmS ) that Bakersfield police arrested a 35-year-old man Tuesday after finding him with stolen mail, a manufactured mail box key, a forged check and an illegal weapon.

Police found the man in a house around the corner from a community mail box from which neighbors say mail has repeatedly been taken.

Sgt. Gary Carruesco says the man had mail from the neighborhood as well as other parts of town.

Court records show that the man was charged with a misdemeanor count of receiving stolen property. Local authorities say that is the strongest charge they can file.

Police have arrested several other suspects for mail theft in recent months.
