BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) - Beaumont police have released the name of an armed man who was fatally shot by an officer investigating a car theft.

Police on Monday identified the man who died as 22-year-old Herbert Ballance of Beaumont.

Authorities say Ballance was a suspect in the auto theft and was armed when he came out of a mobile home Saturday and confronted police.

One officer opened fire. Ballance died at the scene.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave amid a review of the incident.
