JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A bicyclist is in critical condition after being hit by an Amtrak passenger train in Jacksonville.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Lt. Kelvin Anderson said the train hit the unidentified man at 7:30 a.m. Monday after leaving the Northside Jacksonville station.

Anderson tells the Florida Times-Union (https://bit.ly/1UNgXdZ ) the cyclist was waiting for the tracks to clear and appears to have not heard the train coming. Anderson says the cyclist was wearing earbuds.

When the accident occurred a northbound freight train had just cleared the tracks. The Amtrak train was travelling southbound and approached the crossing.

Authorities say the cyclist’s injuries are life-threatening.
