SPRINGVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Alabama Department of Corrections officials say an officer has been stabbed by an inmate at a facility in St. Clair County.

Department spokesman Bob Horton said in a statement that the officer was stabbed early Monday while responding to a fight in a cell block at the St. Clair Correctional Facility.

Horton says the officer’s injuries are non-life threatening.

Horton says the officer was stabbed while he was trying to detain an inmate. The officer was treated in the prison’s infirmary and was later taken to another facility.

Horton says officers were able to secure the cell block and the facility was placed on lockdown.

The inmate’s identity has not been released. Horton says the stabbing is under investigation. It’s unclear what the inmate used to stab the officer with.
