NEW ORLEANS (AP) - An inmate hospitalized over the weekend after trying to harm himself has succumbed to the injuries.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office says 61-year-old Cleveland Tumblin died Monday at 2:33 p.m.

The sheriff’s office, in a news release, says a deputy making a scheduled check Saturday found Tumblin trying to hurt himself using sheriff’s-issued clothing in the shower facility. Medical personnel attended to Tumblin, who was later transferred to University Medical Center for treatment.

The sheriff says an investigation is ongoing. He says a preliminary investigation determined that Tumblin went through his scheduled activities the day he was found without incident. His cellmate also told investigators Tumblin had not said anything about having thoughts of harming himself.

Tumblin had been in custody on accusations including aggravated assault.
