MOREAU, N.Y. (AP) - An upstate New York high school has broken its own record by raising more than $760,000 dollars during its annual 24-hour dance marathon.

The 39th South High Marathon Dance at South Glens Falls High School in Moreau (maw-ROH’) started at 7 p.m. Friday and ended at 7 p.m. Saturday. When it was over, the hundreds of high school students who participated had raised a total of $762,153.87 for charities and local people suffering from terminal illnesses.

That topped last year’s total of nearly $622,000.

Started in 1978 as a small gathering to raise money for a local emergency squad, the event has raised about $5.5 million

Funds raised for this year’s event will be donated to 43 individuals and organizations chosen by a committee of high school students.
