ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say an off-duty Elizabeth police detective opened fire during an altercation with an armed man outside a restaurant.

The Union County prosecutor’s office says the detective fired two shots when he realized 21-year-old Luis Ruiz-Chicaz had a loaded handgun in Elizabeth on Saturday night.

No one was injured.

Ruiz-Chicaz is charged with aggravated assault by pointing a firearm and two weapons offenses. It’s not known if he has a lawyer.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.
