AZLE, Texas (AP) - Authorities say a police officer in Texas has fatally shot a man after he advanced toward the officer with a handgun.

Police were called to a southeast Azle (AY’-zil) residence after a report of a man firing a handgun around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police say officers told the man to drop the handgun upon arrival, but instead the man advanced with the handgun pointed toward the officer. The officer fired his weapon and struck the man multiple times in the torso.

The man was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and then flown to a Fort Worth hospital, where he later died. His name will be released upon notification of family members.

The name of the officer hasn’t been released.

State law enforcement is investigating the shooting.
