CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities have released the name of a man who was fatally shot by a western New York police officer after confronting him with a gun.

Town of Cheektowaga (cheek-tuh-WAH’-guh) police say Monday that the gunman was 34-year-old Darrell Bosell of Java in Wyoming County.

Police say state troopers contacted officers for their help in finding Bosell after he had stolen a gun. An officer encountered Bosell in a parking lot of a suburban Buffalo hotel late Saturday night. Authorities say the officer was immediately forced to use “deadly force to defend himself.”

Bosell was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police say a weapon was found at the scene and appears to be the one that was stolen.

The officer involved is a 16-year veteran of the department. He has been placed on paid administrative leave.
