RED WING, Minn. (AP) - The Red Wing High School boys basketball team has helped a non-verbal student with special needs ask another student to the prom.

Before the team played in the section championship Friday at the Mayo Civic Center, five key players helped eighth-grader Lucas Martin ask freshman Erica Quandt to the formal dance. They were among 10 senior boys who wore homemade T-shirts and held roses to greet Quandt as she entered the school cafeteria.

The Post-Bulletin (https://bit.ly/1pu6w33 ) reports that the Red Wing school district approved a special waiver to allow Martin to attend the prom on April 23 since it’s typically limited to high school students.

The team went on to win the section game against Northfield High School and will now head to state.
