WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) - West Valley City police say three separate shootings within four hours left two men and one dog hospitalized.

Lt. Julie Jorgensen says a man knocked on a door late Saturday, asking for his daughter, but the 42-year-old homeowner didn’t know the man or his daughter. Jorgensen says the situation escalated until the father shot the homeowner in the back.

The homeowner was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police were still looking for the gunman Sunday.

Jorgensen says a 32-year-old man was also hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself in the leg with a handgun. She says alcohol may have been involved.

Police say another West Valley City man shot his neighbor’s dog in the leg around 3 a.m. Sunday. Jorgensen says the man claimed to be startled by the dog while looking for skunks.
