INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) - A man has suffered life-threatening injuries after trying to burn a small grassy area in Buchanan County.

Seventy-eight-year-old Norman McMurrin was trying to burn the area northwest of Independence when the fire began to spread quickly around 12:30 p.m. Monday.

A family member was able to pull him from the flames.

McMurrin was taken to a hospital in Waterloo and then air-lifted to a hospital in Iowa City.

Firefighters put out the fire a short time later.

An investigation into the burn is ongoing.
