BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A 21-year-old New York City man killed in a weekend crash while fleeing from police in Buffalo was a criminal justice major at a local college.

Officials at Buffalo State say Eddie Hernandez Jr. of the Bronx was a senior who was scheduled to graduate in May. The college says he made the dean’s list multiple times and was involved with student-run campus programs.

Buffalo police on Monday identified Hernandez as the driver of a Jeep that sped away from officers attempting a traffic stop on a city street early Saturday morning.

Official say the vehicle slammed into a utility pole a short time later. Hernandez died soon afterward. Two passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Students held a vigil for Hernandez Monday night on the Buff State campus.
