MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - An Horry County police officer has been cleared in shooting and wounding a shoplifting suspect last year who was trying to drive away while dragging another officer.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported (https://bit.ly/24NWpq7) that a State Law Enforcement Division investigation concluded that Lance Cpl. Crystal Buckingham acted properly when she shot 26-year-old Laquandra Borden of Sumter last November.

Investigators determined that Buckingham fired when Borden tried to drive away with Horry County officer Floyd Truss stuck between the woman’s vehicle and its open door.

The incident was recorded on a police dash camera.

Prosecutor Jimmy Richardson says Buckingham acted responsibly.

Borden was able to drive away but was stopped and has been charged with hit and run, aggravated assault, assault and battery, shoplifting and conspiracy.

The previous version of this story’s short headline has been corrected to show officer was cleared, not killed.
