CLAYTON, Ala. (AP) - An inmate at Ventress Correctional Facility has been sentenced for defrauding a tire business by about $200,000 with a smuggled smartphone.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports (https://on.mgmadv.com/1ntaXJQ) that on Thursday, Joseph H. Raper was sentenced to about three years in prison, which he’ll serve while in custody for the remainder of an earlier sentence.

Prosecutor Brandon Essig says Raper called Florida tire retailer STM, LLC. He learned that STM sold tires to HMT, Inc., an Alabama trucking company. Raper called STM and ordered tires under the guise of being an HMT employee.

Court documents say that after stealing the purchase from STM, Raper would sell the tires to a third party at a reduced price.

Essig says the total amount of the fraud was about $200,000.

Raper’s attorney, Jon Taylor, says he believes his client got an appropriate sentence.
