French comic Laurent Lafitte cracked a rape joke at director Woody Allen Wednesday on opening night of the Cannes Film Festival.

Mr. Lafitte, the event’s master of ceremonies, reportedly drew gasps from the crowd prior to Mr. Allen’s premiere of “Cafe Society.”

“You’ve shot so many of your films here in Europe and yet in the U.S. you haven’t even been convicted of rape,” the comedian said, addressing Mr. Allen, THR reported.

The joke was an apparent reference to director Roman Polanski, who fled the U.S. in 1978 to escape sentencing after he pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor.

The joke comes on the heels of column by Mr. Allen’s estranged son, Ronan Farrow, who rebuked the media for failing to ask the iconic director about the alleged abuse of his daughter, Dylan Farrow.

Mr. Lafitte appears in Isabelle Huppert’s Cannes film entry “Elle,” a rape drama directed by Paul Verhoeven, THR reported.
